How to Make a Discord Server Look Good: The 1-Hour Glow-Up
The same Discord server can look like a ghost town or like a place people want to stay, and most of the difference costs nothing. This guide follows our video step by step: what you can fix in one minute, in ten minutes, and the one-hour glow-up with boosts. Every menu path and size was checked against Discord's Help Center in September 2026.
Watch the full 13-minute glow-up above, or open it on YouTube with chapters for every setting. Prefer to read? Everything in the video is below, in the same order.
Quick answer
To make a Discord server look good, add a clear icon and profile card, rename channels with an emoji and a divider, group them into categories, and show colored roles separately in the member list. All of that is free. Boosts add the visual extras: an animated icon and invite background at Level 1 (2 boosts), a server banner and role icons at Level 2 (7), and an animated banner at Level 3 (14).

Level 1: what to fix in one minute
A new server comes with a grey square, one text channel and one voice channel. Three quick changes make it look intentional.
Server icon and profile card
Open the menu next to your server name, choose Server Settings, and you land on Server Profile. Upload a square icon (we use 512 × 512 or larger so it stays sharp), then pick a banner color, write a one-line description and add a few traits. That profile is the card people see on every invite link, so it is your first impression. Our server icon guidelines cover sizes and design tips in more detail.
Channel names with an emoji and a divider
Discord forces text channel names into lowercase with dashes, so the trick is an emoji and a divider character at the front. Open the emoji picker anywhere with Windows + period on a PC, or Control + Command + Space on a Mac. Hover a channel, click the gear, and rename it. Add a channel topic too, so nobody has to ask what a channel is for.
Copy these names as a starting point. Voice channels keep capitals and spaces, so the last two read naturally:
👋┃welcome
📜┃rules
📢┃announcements
💬┃general
🎬┃clips
🎮┃looking-for-group
🎧┃Lounge
🔊┃Squad Up
Categories
Open the server menu, choose Create Category, and make three: Information, Community and Voice. Then drag each channel into place. A short, grouped list reads as organized; a long flat one reads as abandoned.
Level 2: roles and a member list that sorts itself
Ten minutes in, the goal changes from looking tidy to giving people a reason to stay. Roles do most of that work.
-
Create the role
Go to Server Settings, then Roles, then Create Role. Name it and pick a color.
-
Turn on the setting most people miss
On the same Display tab, switch on Display role members separately from online members. The member list now splits into groups such as Owner, Moderators and VIP.
-
Set the order
Drag roles into order, highest at the top. That order decides who shows first, whose name color wins and which roles can manage which.
Keep most roles grey and give color only to the roles that matter. A handful of colors looks like a design; twenty looks like noise.
How Discord permissions work
Permissions decide who can see and post where, and they are what keeps a good-looking server from being wrecked. The rules are simple once you see the order:
-
Everyone starts with @everyone
Every role you add stacks more permissions on top, and a member gets everything from all their roles combined.
-
Categories and channels override roles
A red X blocks a permission there and a green check allows it. Channels synced to a category copy its settings; change one channel on its own and it stops syncing.
-
Conflicts have a winner
If two roles disagree on a channel, the allow wins. A setting for one specific member beats every role. Roles can only manage roles below them, so keep your mod role under yours.
Set permissions on categories, not on each channel. Right-click a category, choose Edit Category, then Permissions, and every synced channel follows. That is how you build a private staff area in seconds: members can't view it, moderators can.
Text formatting that makes rules look designed
A rules channel is the page every new member reads, and Discord's Markdown goes much further than bold. Here is every option we use:
| You type | Discord shows |
|---|---|
| *text* or _text_ | Italics |
| **text** | Bold |
| ***text*** | Bold italics |
| __text__ | Underline |
| ~~text~~ | Strikethrough |
| # Title, ## Title, ### Title | Large, medium and small headers |
| -# text | Small grey subtext |
| - item or 1. item | Bulleted or numbered list |
| > text | Block quote |
| `code` or ```block``` | Inline code or a code block |
| ||text|| | Spoiler, hidden until clicked |
| [text](link) | Masked link |
For colored text, Rebane's Discord colored text generator builds a colored code block you can paste. For more tricks, see our guide to Discord text formatting, and if you need the words themselves, start from our free Discord server rules templates.
Timestamps in every member's own time zone
Discord counts time as a Unix timestamp: the number of seconds since January 1, 1970. Put that number in a tag, and every member sees the time converted to their own time zone. The letter at the end sets the style: t for the time, D for the date, F for the full date and time, and R for a live countdown.
Game night starts <t:1790985600:F> (<t:1790985600:R>)
Welcome messages, notifications and announcements
These settings make a server feel looked after instead of noisy:
-
Welcome every new member
In Server Settings, open Engagement, set your welcome channel as the System Messages Channel and turn on the random welcome message. New members get a greeting with a button to wave hello.
-
Default notifications: only mentions
Set Default Notifications to Only @mentions so new members aren't pinged by every message. A server people mute is a server people forget.
-
Read-only announcements
Edit the announcements channel, open Permissions, pick @everyone and switch off Send Messages. Save slowmode for genuinely busy chats; a new server doesn't need it.
-
Custom emojis and stickers
Every server gets 50 emoji slots and 5 sticker slots for free. Stickers must be exactly 320 × 320 pixels, as a PNG or an animated PNG, up to 512 KB. Our custom emoji tutorial walks through making your own.
Onboarding, forums, AutoMod and events
Turning on Community in Server Settings unlocks the features that make a bigger server run itself.
Onboarding
Onboarding asks new members a few questions before they get in, such as which games they play. Each answer hands them roles and channels, so a Minecraft player sees the Minecraft channels, and members can change their answers later under Channels & Roles. You choose default channels that everyone sees; the setup screen tells you if you need more before you can turn it on.
Community also unlocks announcement channels. When you publish a post there, it goes out to every server that follows your channel.
Forum channels
In a forum, every post is its own thread, so a question and all its answers stay together instead of getting buried in general chat. Write post guidelines, add tags such as Clips and Help, require a tag on every post, set a default reaction, and switch the default layout to Gallery so clips show as a grid.
AutoMod and events
Under Safety Setup, open AutoMod and edit the custom keyword rule. Add a word with an asterisk on the end, such as scam*, to catch every variation, then choose what happens: block the message, alert your mod channel, or time the member out. For events, choose Create Event from the server menu. It shows at the top of your channel list, and members who press Interested get a notification when it starts, so game nights actually fill up.
Bots that make a server feel alive
Discord now calls bots apps. Open the App Directory from the server menu, or browse top.gg, and choose Add App. Most bots work through slash commands: type a slash and you see every command your bots offer.
For self-assigned roles we use Atlas, which posts a message with buttons that add or remove a role. Our guides to reaction roles and ticket bots cover two popular jobs step by step. Give each bot only the permissions it needs, and drag its role above the roles it hands out.
Level 3: the one-hour glow-up with Server Boosts
Boosts are a paid upgrade that members give to a server. Every Nitro subscription includes 2 boosts, and anyone can buy more. They add up: 2 boosts unlock Level 1, 7 unlock Level 2 and 14 unlock Level 3. Extra boosts can buy additional perks for 3 boosts each, on top of your level. Everything is managed in the Server Boosts tab at the top of your channel list, and Discord's Server Boosting FAQ lists every perk.
| Perk | Unlocks at | Size and rules |
|---|---|---|
| Animated server icon | Level 1 | Square GIF |
| Invite background | Level 1 | 1920 × 1080, JPG or PNG, no animation |
| Server banner | Level 2 (animated at Level 3) | At least 960 × 540, 16:9 |
| Role icons | Level 2 | 64 × 64, up to 256 KB |
| Server Tags | 3 extra boosts | 4 characters plus a badge |
| Enhanced Role Styles | 3 extra boosts | Gradient and holographic colors |
Animated icon and invite background
At Level 1 your server icon can move, and you can set an invite background: the image behind your invite card. It has to be 1920 × 1080 and can't be animated, so keep the middle clear for the card. Browse Discord invite backgrounds if you want a ready-made one.
The server banner
At Level 2 you can add a banner at the top of your channel list. Upload at least 960 × 540 in a 16:9 ratio, keep the top 48 pixels simple, and skip logos and text, because your server name already sits on top. At Level 3 the banner animates for 5 seconds when the server loads and again on hover. Our Discord banner size guide covers every banner type.
Each of these text-free banners includes an animated GIF for Level 3 and a static PNG for Level 2:

Role icons
Also at Level 2: go to Server Settings, then Roles, pick a role, and find Role Icon under Display. Upload a 64 × 64 image under 256 KB, or pick an emoji. You need the Manage Roles permission and the desktop app. Each member shows one icon, from their highest role that has one, so put icons on your top ranks first and the hierarchy explains itself. Icons show in the default Cozy chat view, not in Compact mode. Discord role icons 101 has more ideas.

Server Tags and Enhanced Role Styles
These two perks cost 3 boosts each, and they need boosts that aren't already holding your level. Enhanced Role Styles gives a role an animated gradient or a holographic color, so your top role stands out. A Server Tag is up to 4 letters or numbers with a small badge; members switch it on in their own profile, and it then shows next to their name across Discord, even in other servers. That makes every message they send a small advert for your community.
One last touch: if you own the server, match your own profile to it with the same colors and style. Our aesthetic Discord profile ideas help with that.
Five things that make a Discord server look bad
-
Too many channels
Empty channels make a server look dead. Start small and add channels when people ask for them.
-
Rainbow roles with no order
Pick a small palette and keep most roles grey.
-
Pinging everyone for everything
People mute the server, and a muted server is a dead one.
-
Text on the server banner
Your server name already sits on top of it, so text there clashes.
-
Mixed art styles
An icon, banner and invite background from three different styles look like three servers. Matching art makes it feel like one.
You don't need the full hour to see a difference. Do the one-minute level today, add roles this week, and save boosts for when your community is ready for them. If you are starting from scratch, our guide to making a Discord server covers the setup before any of this.
Discord server design questions
Can you make a Discord server look good without Nitro?
Yes. The icon, profile card, channel names, categories, roles, formatting, onboarding and forums are all free. Boosts are only needed for the animated icon, invite background, server banner, role icons, Server Tags and Enhanced Role Styles, and any member can boost your server.
What size is a Discord server banner?
At least 960 × 540 pixels in a 16:9 ratio. A 1920 × 1080 image is resized automatically. It needs Level 2 (7 boosts), and an animated banner needs Level 3 (14 boosts).
How do I make aesthetic channel names?
Put an emoji and a divider such as ┃ in front of each name, for example 💬┃general. Copy the list in the Level 1 section above and rename your channels to match.
Do role icons need boosts?
Yes. Role icons unlock at Level 2, which takes 7 boosts. Each icon is 64 × 64 pixels and up to 256 KB, and you set it on the desktop app.
What is a good layout for a Discord server?
Three categories cover most servers: Information (welcome, rules, announcements), Community (general, clips and topic channels) and Voice. Keep the list short, and let onboarding show extra channels only to the members who want them.
How many boosts does an animated server banner need?
14 boosts, for Level 3. At Level 2 you can use a static banner, and at Level 3 it plays for 5 seconds when the server loads and again when someone hovers over it.
