How to get an animated PFP: a glowing X profile picture with a Discord badge in front of a wall of animated profile pictures

How to Get an Animated PFP on Discord (Nitro or Not)

An animated PFP is the fastest way to make a Discord profile feel alive. Getting one takes Nitro and a GIF, but a good one depends on a few things most guides skip: the circle crop, the first frame and a loop that doesn't jump.

Quick answer

To get an animated PFP on Discord, you need Discord Nitro. Nitro Basic doesn't include it. Go to User Settings → Profiles → Change Avatar, choose or upload a GIF, crop it and select Save Changes. Servers can use an animated icon from Boost Level 1 (2 Boosts). Without Nitro, a GIF won't animate, but Shop decorations can still add motion.

We design animated Discord profile pictures, and every rule below was checked against Discord's Help Center in September 2026. You'll learn what each plan allows, how to set one, how to make one that reads well at tiny sizes, and how to fix one that won't move.

Do you need Nitro for an animated PFP?

Yes. Discord only lets Nitro subscribers upload a GIF as their avatar. The same applies to a GIF profile banner and to a different avatar for each server. Nitro Basic, the cheaper plan, covers emoji, stickers and bigger uploads, but not an animated avatar.

Only full Nitro animates the picture itself. Decorations from the Shop work on every plan.

Servers work differently, through Server Boosts instead of your own subscription. According to Discord's Server Boosting FAQ, an animated server icon unlocks at Level 1 (2 Boosts) and an animated server banner at Level 3 (14 Boosts). Every Nitro subscription includes 2 Boosts, so one Nitro member can take a server to Level 1 alone.

Not sure the subscription is worth it for you? Our Discord Nitro guide weighs every perk.

How to set an animated PFP on Discord

Once you have Nitro and a GIF, it takes about a minute on desktop:

  1. Open your profile settings

Select the gear at the bottom left for User Settings, then open the Profiles tab.

  2. Select Change Avatar

Choose GIF lets you search Discord's GIF library. Upload Image lets you pick your own .gif file.

  3. Crop it

Drag and zoom until the subject sits inside the circle, then select Apply.

  4. Save Changes

Nothing changes until you save. Your new avatar now plays on your profile.

Choose GIF, crop, save. The interface is recreated for illustration.

On mobile, tap your avatar at the bottom right, then Edit Profile, then your current avatar, and pick your GIF. For one server only, right-click your avatar in that server's chat and choose Edit Per-server Profile. Your main avatar stays the same everywhere else.

Discord keeps your 6 most recent avatars under Recent Avatars, so switching back later takes one click. See Discord's per-server profiles article for the mobile steps.

Where your animated PFP plays

People see your animation when they open your profile, and in chat. There's one exception worth designing for. Discord's Reduced Motion setting stops GIF avatars from playing in chat unless the viewer clicks into your profile.

Reduced Motion is the viewer's setting, and it follows their computer's own motion settings by default, so you can't turn it off for them. Those people see a still frame of your avatar in chat. That's why the first frame of your GIF matters as much as the motion.

How to make an animated PFP that looks good

Most animated profile pictures that disappoint fail at the same four checks. Run through them before you upload:

Animated PFP anatomy: a 512 by 512 canvas cropped to a circle, a safe zone for the subject, a readable first frame and the avatar tested at 40, 80 and 120 pixels
Square canvas, subject in the middle, a strong first frame and a small file.

Start with a square 512 × 512 canvas

Discord crops every avatar to a circle, so the corners never show. Work at 512 × 512 pixels, the same size we recommend in our Discord profile picture size guide, and keep faces, letters and logos well inside the circle.

Design for tiny sizes

In chat, your avatar is only a few dozen pixels wide. Shrink your GIF to 40 × 40 before you upload. If you can't tell what it is at that size, use a bolder shape, a single initial or fewer details. Fine lines and small text are the first things to disappear.

Hide the loop point

A GIF avatar repeats forever, so the last frame has to lead straight back into the first. Otherwise every repeat ends in a visible jump. Periodic motion, like a pulse, a flicker, a spin or drifting light, loops cleanly. Motion that builds up and then resets usually doesn't.

The lightning in our Energy design keeps moving, so the loop has no visible restart.

Keep it short, too. Our animated designs loop in 1 to 5 seconds, which keeps files small and motion smooth. Always watch your GIF repeat at least three times before you judge it.

Keep the file light

Save the final file as a GIF. Discord lists PNG and GIF as the avatar formats, and only a GIF animates. We recommend staying under about 2.5 MB so your avatar loads quickly for everyone who opens your profile. Shorter loops, fewer frames and fewer colors all shrink the file.

GIF also stores at most 256 colors per frame. Smooth gradients can band into visible stripes. Bold, flat colors or a little dithering during export look cleaner than a soft gradient.

Animated PFP ideas that work at avatar size

The styles that read best in a small circle share one thing: a single strong subject with the motion around it. Here are six of our designs, looping:

Six animated Discord profile pictures looping: glitch letter, orbit rings, purple energy, dripping red letter, pastel swirl and neon sign
Glitch, Kinetic, Future, Slime, Pastel and Neon Sign, each a real animated design from our collection.
  • A single initial

One bold letter survives any size, and the animation can live in the glow, the texture or the background.

  • Energy and light

Neon flicker, lightning, fire and glitch effects loop naturally, because they never settle into a final pose.

  • Soft motion

Pastel swirls and slow color shifts suit calmer profiles and stay easy on the eyes.

  • Your game or community

A Minecraft-style block world or a clan logo tells people what you're about before they read your bio.

Three ways to make your own

How you make one depends on how much time and software you have:

Method Software Best for
Convert a clip A free online converter A moment from a game or video
Animate it yourself Photoshop or After Effects Full control over every frame
Get one designed None A finished look with your name

Convert a video clip to a GIF

A free tool like ezgif's video to GIF converter handles the whole job in your browser. Upload the clip, trim it to 2 to 4 seconds, crop it to a square, resize it to 512 × 512 and run the optimizer until the file is under about 2.5 MB. Pick a clip that already loops, such as an idle animation, so the restart isn't obvious.

Animate it in Photoshop or After Effects

In Photoshop, build your frames on the Timeline, then export with File → Export → Save for Web (Legacy), choose GIF and set Looping to Forever. In After Effects, animate on a square 512 × 512 composition, render a short MP4 and convert it to GIF. Either way, check the first frame and the loop point before you export.

Get one designed with your name

If you'd rather skip the software, our designs arrive finished. Each one comes with your name or initial added, as a PNG plus an animated GIF and MP4, and is made by a human designer with no AI. Personalized files usually arrive within minutes.

No Nitro? What you can still animate

Without Nitro, your avatar itself stays still. If you upload a GIF, it won't play. But there are three honest ways to add motion.

A decoration moves around your avatar. Only Nitro animates the picture itself. Interface and decoration recreated for illustration.
  • Avatar decorations and profile effects

These animated frames and effects come from Discord's Shop, which is open to every user. Nitro members get special pricing, and some items can be bought with Orbs.

  • An animated server icon

If you run a server with 2 Boosts, its icon can animate even if you don't have Nitro yourself.

  • Nitro credits from Orbs

Orbs, which you earn by completing Quests, can buy Nitro credits. They give you Nitro for a limited time, including a GIF avatar.

How to make your Discord server icon animated

Once your server reaches Level 1 (2 Boosts), open the server menu, choose Server Settings, then Server Profile. Select Change Server Icon, upload your GIF and select Save Changes. Discord only lets you edit the server profile on desktop or in the browser.

The same design rules apply, with one addition: the icon sits in everyone's server list, so it has to read even smaller than an avatar. Our Discord server icon guide covers sizing in detail, and the animated server icon collection has designs made for that spot. For the rest of your server's look, see how to make a Discord server look good.

Animated PFPs on other apps

Discord is the easiest place to show off an animated profile picture. Elsewhere, support varies:

App Animated? How
Discord Yes, with Nitro Upload a GIF avatar
Telegram Yes Set a profile video and pick its still frame
Steam Yes, from the shop Buy one in the Points Shop
YouTube No No animated GIFs for channel pictures

On Telegram, the still frame you choose appears in chats, so the first-frame rule applies there too. Steam's animated avatars are Points Shop items, bought with the Steam Points you earn on the platform.

Why is my animated PFP not moving?

Almost every case comes down to one of these:

  • No Nitro, or Nitro Basic

Only full Nitro plays a GIF avatar. Check which plan you have in User Settings.

  • The file isn't really a GIF

A PNG won't animate, and a video renamed to .gif isn't a real GIF. Convert the clip with a GIF tool first.

  • Reduced Motion is on

If you see still avatars in chat, check User Settings → Appearance → Accessibility, where the default follows your computer's motion settings.

  • The change wasn't saved

After Apply, you still need Save Changes. On mobile, tap Save at the top right.

Ready to set yours up? Pick a design that reads at 40 pixels, check its first frame, and upload it through Profiles → Change Avatar. For more profile ideas, see our aesthetic Discord profile ideas.

Animated PFP questions

Does Nitro Basic include an animated profile picture?

No. Nitro Basic covers emoji, stickers and larger uploads. Animated avatars, GIF banners and per-server profiles are full Nitro perks.

Can you get a GIF PFP on Discord without Nitro?

No, a GIF avatar needs Nitro. Without it, you can add an animated avatar decoration from the Shop, animate your server's icon at Boost Level 1, or earn Nitro credits with Orbs for a limited time.

What size should an animated PFP be?

Use a square GIF of 512 × 512 pixels, and keep it under about 2.5 MB so it loads quickly. Keep the subject in the middle, since Discord crops avatars to a circle.

Can I use an MP4 as my Discord avatar?

No. Discord's avatar upload takes PNG and GIF files, so convert a video to a GIF first. Trim it to a short loop and crop it to a square before converting.

How do I make my Discord server PFP animated?

Your server needs Boost Level 1, which takes 2 Boosts. Then open Server Settings → Server Profile on desktop, select Change Server Icon, upload a GIF and save.

How long should an animated PFP loop be?

Short. Our animated designs loop in 1 to 5 seconds, which keeps the file small and the motion smooth. Make sure the last frame flows back into the first.
