Minecraft Server Ranks: Rank List, Names and Setup

Ranks give players something to work toward, show who is on staff, and fund your server through a webstore. This guide covers the rank lists most Minecraft servers use, name ideas for your own ladder, how to set ranks up, and matching rank tags for your forum.

Quick answer

Most Minecraft servers use two rank ladders: player ranks earned or bought (Member → VIP → VIP+ → MVP → MVP+) and staff ranks (Helper → Moderator → Admin → Owner, plus Builder). Create each rank as a group in a permissions plugin such as LuckPerms, give it a colored chat prefix, and show matching rank tags on your forum and webstore.

A Common Minecraft Rank List

Most servers run two separate ladders: player ranks that are earned or bought, and staff ranks that come with moderation powers. This is a typical setup:

Rank Ladder Typical role or perks
Member Player Default rank for everyone who joins
VIP Player Colored name, a few cosmetic perks
VIP+ Player More homes, kits or pets
MVP Player Larger perks, such as /fly in the lobby
MVP+ Player Top supporter rank with exclusive cosmetics
Helper Staff Answers questions, can mute
Moderator Staff Kicks, bans and handles reports
Builder Staff Builds spawns, maps and events
Admin Staff Manages staff, plugins and settings
Owner Staff Full control of the server

Three to five paid ranks are usually enough. More than that makes each step feel small and your webstore hard to read.

How to Set Up Ranks on Your Server

Vanilla Minecraft has no rank system, so servers use a permissions plugin. LuckPerms is the standard: each rank is a group, higher ranks inherit the ones below, and a prefix shows the rank in chat.

/lp creategroup vip
/lp group vip parent add default
/lp group vip meta setprefix 100 "&a[VIP] "

Our LuckPerms tutorial walks through the full setup, and the Minecraft server commands list covers every rank command. For prefix colors, see our Minecraft rank colors and color codes.

Rank Tags for Your Forum and Webstore

Showing the same ranks on your website makes them feel real. Our Sleek Skyblock pack started with 52 rank names in 2017 and now includes 80 rank images, with an optional editable Photoshop file so you can add your own.

Minecraft rank questions

What ranks should a Minecraft server have?

Start with a default Member rank, two to four supporter ranks, and a staff ladder of Helper, Moderator and Admin. Add Builder or Developer only if you actually have people in those roles.

Can you make ranks without a plugin?

Only cosmetic ones. Vanilla scoreboard teams can color names and add a prefix, but they can't grant permissions. For real ranks with perks, use a plugin such as LuckPerms.

How do I give a player a rank?

With LuckPerms, run /lp user <player> parent set <rank>. Webstores such as Tebex can run the same command automatically when someone buys a rank.

How many paid ranks should I sell?

Three to five is typical. Make every step add something players can see or use, so each upgrade feels worth it.
